JOB DESCRIPTION

The Specialized Communications Instructor (SCI) or ASL Instructor works directly with Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Non-Verbal participants alongside CVTC management to facilitate the evolution of the program to include specialized Deaf Services. ASL Instructor will be proficient in bridging the Deaf/Hard of Hearing (HOH) and Disability communities, with cultural knowledge and expertise in instruction and supervision of Adults with Intellectual Disabilities, challenging behaviors, and/or dual diagnosis. This position will comply with the Agency’s policies and procedures and demonstrate appropriate compliance to Employee Rules of Conduct.

DAILY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Integrate and enhance Deaf culture and knowledge in the Day Program setting, which includes, but is not limited to, Deaf culture, ASL curriculum training, the Deaf/Hard of Hearing and Disability communities, and organizational practices.
  • Provide direct individual and group instruction to participants in accordance with participant’s abilities, targets goals, and training level and agency guidelines.
  • Implement age-appropriate training activities and apply training methods to ensure structure to the working environment.
  • Engage in teaching and instructing participants and staff in Deaf culture, knowledge, and communication.
  • Improve knowledge of culturally and linguistically appropriate training methods for participants.
  • Incorporate ASL curriculum and assistive communication devices into weekly lesson plans, Individual Service Plans (ISP), and Individual Program Plans (IPP).
  • Maintain a positive environment that promotes non-aversive behavior programming, use positive interactions with participants daily, respond to crises using good judgment, and apply approved crisis intervention techniques.
  • Thoroughly and accurately complete program paperwork.
  • Collaborate with team members to complete program paperwork.
  • Provide direct individual and group instruction to participants during the assessment process and in accordance with participant’s abilities, targets goals, training level and agency goals.
  • Initiate open communication and demonstrate work habits that foster teamwork with co-workers.
  • Demonstrate positive and professional communication with other agencies and businesses.
  • Maintain a clean, organized and safe environment.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

PERIODIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide American Sign Language training to the instructors as needed.
  • Prepare and develop individualized assessments, objectives, and lesson plans that align with program and participant goals and comply with audit file requirements.
  • Provide thorough and accurate participant evaluations and objectives to the Program Coordinator, in addition to collaborating with team leaders to determine the lessons to be taught to the participants.
  • Attend participant meetings as needed.
  • Ensure that the participant's physical needs are met, and keep supervisors informed about any potential health concerns through appropriate communication methods, such as email, text, or in-person discussions, ensuring timely and clear information sharing. In case of a medical crisis, initiate approved first-aid techniques as needed.
  • Develop and present documentation and data and provide input on individual participant programs.
  • Initiate timely communication through email, text messages, or in person, ensuring effective communication with coworkers and external professionals regarding participant services and program matters.
  • Participate in and successfully complete required in-service training to maintain certification and improve job related skills.
  • Evaluate the existing program structure and collaborate with others to develop and implement teaching methods, techniques, and resources to enhance program effectiveness.
  • Collaborate effectively as an interdisciplinary team member to evaluate participant progress, crises, and medical issues; recommend program adjustments; and adapt strategies to accommodate participant needs.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • California Driver License
  • High School Diploma/GED/Degree
  • Provide a DMV Printout and Proof of Liability Insurance
  • Driving your own vehicle is required (We reimburse mileage!)
  • Physical requirements include- passing a TB test, a drug screening and a physical
  • Fingerprinting and background screening
  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) is required (2 years)

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 1 - 3 years of experience teaching ASL, whether in academic settings, as an ASL family advocate, in for- profit or non-profit Deaf organizations, or in Deaf Plus community.
  • Experience working with, Deaf/Hard of Hearing or Deaf Plus or Adults with intellectual disabilities is a plus.
