1. WHO launches global Disability Health Equity Initiative
On June 10, 2025, during a UN event in New York, the World Health Organization unveiled its Disability Health Equity Initiative. The aim is to tackle barriers faced by the 1.3 billion people with disabilities worldwide by:
- Empowering disability-led leadership and organizations
- Prioritizing disability-inclusive health policies
- Making health systems and services more accessible
- Building robust data and evidence systems
With input from governments, NGOs, academia, and disabled people’s groups, this initiative is a turning point in global disability health.
2. U.S. House passes anti-discrimination Organ Transplant Bill
On June 25, 2025, the U.S. House approved the Charlotte Woodward Organ Transplant Discrimination Prevention Act. This legislation will prohibit refusing organ referrals or waitlist placement because of disability— closing a critical loophole that had allowed such discrimination.
This marks a milestone toward ensuring equitable healthcare access for individuals with disabilities.
3. U.S. Supreme Court eases legal access for children with disabilities
In a unanimous June 12, 2025 decision, the Supreme Court ruled for a Minnesota student with epilepsy, lowering the burden of proof for suing schools over inadequate disability accommodations. Families now only need to show “deliberate indifference,” aligning with ADA standards and making it easier to enforce IDEA rights.
This ruling enhances protections for students with disabilities in educational settings.
