Small Gestures, Big Impact

At CVTC, leadership doesn't always look like a title—it often looks like kindness, initiative, and heart. Refugio, affectionately known by everyone as Cuco, is a shining example of the quiet strength that holds our program together. As a member of the Employment Team, Cuco consistently goes above and beyond to ensure participants feel seen, supported, and prepared for success.

One recent moment perfectly captured his dedication. While at Graceada Park in Modes- to, Cuco spotted a familiar face—local social media influencer and street barber “Bounce Back Sammy,” known for his work supporting people experiencing homelessness and mental health challenges. Never one to pass up an opportunity that could benefit oth- ers, Cuco struck up a conversation.

What happened next was a simple act of kindness with a lasting impact. Sammy offered to give two of our participants, Danny and Brian, professional haircuts right there in the park. The results were more than a fresh look—they were moments of confidence, digni- ty, and connection.

This is the kind of quiet leadership Cuco brings to CVTC every day. Whether he's advo- cating for employment opportunities, encouraging participants to believe in themselves, or seizing a spontaneous moment to bring someone joy, his work is guided by compas- sion and respect. He doesn’t ask for recognition—but it’s well deserved.
