CVTC Modesto Cultural Liaison

From the Deaf Cultural Liaison
As the new Deaf Cultural Liaison, I offer staff and participants the opportunity to experience and learn different forms of communication, including the use of hands, eyes, and body movement.
For many, this may be their first time interacting with a Deaf person, and I’m excited to help bridge that gap. By exposing everyone to these unique forms of expression, staff will gain a better understanding of how to communicate effectively, allowing participants to express their thoughts and feelings freely.
I work closely with one-on-one staff who interact directly with the Deaf Plus participants, and I have seen their personal growth through communication. The participants feel more included when I take the time to have casual conversations—asking about their day and their favorites—to get to know them better.
I have also seen the staff's personal growth as they acquire signs to communicate with participants, demonstrating how to ask questions and show actions through interaction with them.
