Harvesting Happiness and Independence at Fresno West

CVTC Fresno West has a partnership with the Fresno EOC Transit System, which has been a great support for many years by providing transportation to those we serve.

In addition, Fresno EOC is now offering participants valuable vocational training opportunities. Participants are thrilled to be part of the Vehicle Detailing Program at Fresno EOC, which recently shared a testimonial highlighting the excellent work they have been doing.

In the first picture, Doug is seen cleaning the EOC bus surfaces, ensuring that the bus is sanitized and thoroughly cleaned.

In the second picture, the team is working together to wash the bus and prepare it in prime condition for its next pickup. Everyone is excited to work and develop skills that promote their independence. We invite everyone to visit the link below to get an inside peek:

If there is one thing about Fresno East, we like to throw a party. Management and Staff alike enjoy planning out events to see the light in the Participant’s eyes and witness them have a fabulous time. Throwing events like our annual Thanksgiving dinner encourages Participant independence as they can choose what they would like on their plate. Not only does it encourage Participant attendance, but it also encourages social interaction and sharpens their social skills.

Fresno East would like to emphasize one of our Participants, Brian. Brian was able to join in on our Thanksgiving dinner at Fresno East’s warehouse and be around more than 40 of his peers. Normally, being around a large group of people could be challenging for Brian, but he was able to participate and succeed. Brian, we are proud of you and all the success you are displaying here at Fresno East! You are our piece of pie that we enjoy gobbling about!

CVTC Stockton West is excited to highlight the positive experiences we’ve had at our program this year! We’ve hosted fantastic events like Art Hops, which showcase the creative talents of our participants. Most recently, we celebrated our Participant Recognition Day, where participants and staff brought their own Disney magic to life!

For the event, staff and participants selected their favorite Disney movies to inspire their booths, featuring a wide range of choices from across the Disneyverse. The displays included Inside Out 2, Holes, Coco, Lilo & Stitch, The Little Mermaid, Monsters Inc., Toy Story, and Alice in Wonderland.

Participants enjoyed a nacho bar and sno-cones, adding to the festive atmosphere, along with an exciting raffle featuring fun prizes!

Our participants were able to take pictures at a photo booth and keep the photos to capture their happiness and create everlasting memories. We also had our friends, the Advocates from PCS, provide live music and DJ for the event! Participants and visitors alike had smiles from ear to ear. One participant from PCS shared, “It feels like a block party.”

Participant John M. wanted to shine a light on his staff member in Alpha, Karl C. Although Karl has only been with us for a short time, John feels close to him, stating, “He’s a good guy to talk to.” John shared that Karl helps him stay motivated during their InShape outings by making them fun and encouraging him to be his best.

One of those standouts is Gabriela, better known as “Gaba” or “Gabby.” As an Instructor IV, Gabby has been part of the CVTC family for five and a half years, leaving a lasting impact through her creativity, inclusivity, and dedication.

Gabby’s leadership goes well beyond her role in the classroom. She’s always looking for ways to help her team grow, making sure to share any training or knowledge she gains. By doing this, she creates a supportive and collaborative environment that benefits not just her team, but everyone involved.

Gabby has a special talent for bringing people together. Her classroom is always buzzing with activity, whether they’re diving into new ideas, exploring different cultures, or celebrating special occasions. She’s organized everything from fun contests and cultural potlucks to bringing in traditional Mexican dancers for Mexico’s Independence Day. Thanks to her efforts, everyone at the site feels included and valued.

Spirit Weeks and dress-up days are another area where Gabby shines. Her team always goes all out, fully embracing the themes and making every event fun and memorable. DISABILITY AWARENESS

Enhanced Support For Californians With Intellectual Disabilities

On September 28, 2024, Governor Gavin Newsom signed a series of bills aimed at improving the lives of Californians with disabilities, particularly those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). This legislative package focuses on increasing accessibility, inclusivity, and support across various facets of life, including education, employment, and community integration.

Key highlights from these bills include::

  • Transparency in Support Services: Regional centers providing services to individuals with I/DD are now subject to the Public Records Act, enhancing transparency and accountability in the allocation of approximately $15 billion in annual funding.
  • Prohibition of Prone Restraint in Schools: The use of prone restraint—a dangerous physical restraint technique—has been banned in all California schools, safeguarding students with disabilities from potential harm.
  • Early Planning for Postsecondary Goals: Students with disabilities who have an Individualized Education Program (IEP) will begin planning for postsecondary goals no later than age 16, facilitating smoother transitions to higher education and employment opportunities.

These legislative measures build upon California's ongoing commitment to support the approximately 400,000 residents with I/DD, ensuring they have the resources and opportunities to thrive within their communities.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Staying Safe in the Winter: Tips for a Healthy Season

Staying Safe in the Winter: Tips for a Healthy Season

Winter brings beautiful landscapes and cozy moments, but it also comes with challenges like icy conditions, cold temperatures, and seasonal illnesses. Here are some simple tips to stay safe and healthy this winter:

1. DRESS FOR THE WEATHER

Even if it doesn’t snow, winter mornings and evenings can be chilly. Wear layers to stay warm, especially if you're spending time outdoors. Keep a light jacket or sweater handy for fluctuating temperatures.

2. STAY PREPARED FOR RAIN

Winter often brings increased rainfall. Keep an umbrella, waterproof shoes, and rain gear ready to stay dry and prevent slipping on wet surfaces. Check for local flood warnings and avoid driving through standing water.

3. MAINTAIN YOUR HOME

Ensure your heating system is working properly and seal any drafts to keep your home comfortable. Clean out gutters and check drainage systems to avoid water buildup during heavy rains.

4. DRIVE SAFELY

Rainy weather can make roads slick and visibility poor. Keep your windshield wipers in good condition, drive at safe speeds, and maintain extra space between your vehicle and others.

5. STAY HEALTHY

Winter is also flu season. Wash your hands frequently, stay hydrated, and eat a balanced diet to support your immune system. Consider getting a flu shot to reduce your risk of illness.

6. WATCH FOR SUDDEN WEATHER CHANGES

Even in mild climates, winter can bring unexpected temperature drops or storms. Stay informed about the weather and be prepared with appropriate clothing and supplies.

By taking these precautions, you can enjoy the winter season while staying safe, healthy, and prepared for any surprises!

Each year, December 3rd marks the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), a global initiative established by the United Nations to promote understanding, inclusion, and advocacy for the rights of individuals with disabilities. The 2024 theme, "Empowering Voices: Inclusion for All", highlights the importance of ensuring that people with disabilities are not only heard but actively included in decision-making processes at all levels.

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities reminds us to reflect on the progress made and the work still needed to create a world where everyone, regardless of ability, has equal opportunities and a sense of belonging. It’s a chance for day programs, caregivers, and communities to come together in support of a more inclusive future.

Giving Thanks: A Time for Reflection and Gratitude:

My name is Bud Mullanix and I am the new CEO for CVTC. It is truly an honor and blessing to be able to work with such a giving and talented group of people, who give so much of themselves to help serve those who need some extra help. After 7+ years of working for Valley Mountain Regional Center where I learned so much, and the biggest learning experience was that of helping others.

As we approach the season of Thanksgiving, it's a moment to pause and reflect on the many blessings in our lives. Whether gathered around a table with loved ones or taking a quiet moment for ourselves, this time of year encourages us to appreciate all that we have and the people who make our lives meaningful.

Gratitude is more than just an annual tradition. It's a mindset that can transform the way we see the world. Studies have shown that cultivating gratitude can improve our mental health, strengthen relationships, and even enhance our physical well-being. When we take the time to acknowledge the good, we create a more positive environment for ourselves and those around us.

As part of this community, we are deeply grateful for each and every one of you. Your support, engagement, and contributions make this journey special, and we couldn’t be more thankful to have you with us. As we continue forward, let’s carry the spirit of Thanksgiving in our hearts—not just this month, but every day of the year.

Wishing you a season of peace, joy, and heartfelt gratitude.

  5. Display: Let it dry and display your snowy owl on a table, mantel, or as part of a centerpiece.
