CVTC Modesto Cultural Liaison

Poster of American Sign Language alphabet.

From the Deaf Cultural Liaison

As the new Deaf Cultural Liaison, I offer staff and participants the opportunity to experience and learn different forms of communication, including the use of hands, eyes, and body movement.

For many, this may be their first time interacting with a Deaf person, and I’m excited to help bridge that gap. By exposing everyone to these unique forms of expression, staff will gain a better understanding of how to communicate effectively, allowing participants to express their thoughts and feelings freely.

I work closely with one-on-one staff who interact directly with the Deaf Plus participants, and I have seen their personal growth through communication. The participants feel more included when I take the time to have casual conversations—asking about their day and their favorites—to get to know them better.

I have also seen the staff's personal growth as they acquire signs to communicate with participants, demonstrating how to ask questions and show actions through interaction with them.

MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

“Together, we can create an environment where everyone’s contributions are recognized and celebrated.”

Bud Mullanix, Chief Executive Officer

From the CEO: Fostering Inclusion: Empowering Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities in the Workplace

A Message from the CEO

At CVTC, one of our core values is the belief that diversity and inclusion make us stronger. We understand that each individual brings a unique perspective, skill set, and life experience to our team. This is why we are committed to creating an environment that embraces all forms of diversity, including the inclusion of individuals with intellectual disabilities.

The Value of Inclusion

Individuals with intellectual disabilities are capable of contributing significantly to any team or organization. Their perspectives, creativity, and dedication bring invaluable assets to the workplace. By fostering an inclusive culture, we unlock new potential in our employees and strengthen our team’s ability to innovate and problem-solve.

Research has shown that workplaces that embrace diversity – including employees with intellectual disabilities – experience improved employee morale, increased productivity, and stronger team dynamics. It’s essential that we challenge the common misconceptions and biases that often surround intellectual disabilities and instead create a supportive environment where everyone can thrive.

Supporting and Empowering Our Team Members

Working with individuals with intellectual disabilities is not about giving them “special treatment” but about ensuring they have the support, resources, and respect to succeed just like anyone else. Some steps we’ve taken at CVTC to create an inclusive environment include:

  1. Customized Training and Development Programs We offer tailored learning opportunities that are aligned with the strengths and abilities of individuals with intellectual disabilities.
  2. Collaborative Teamwork Encouraging collaboration between all team members ensures that everyone, regardless of their abilities, can contribute and learn from each other.
  3. Mentorship Opportunities We provide mentorship programs where individuals can receive guidance and support, helping them build their confidence and grow professionally.
  4. Ongoing Education and Awareness We are committed to raising awareness about intellectual disabilities across the company, offering workshops and training to all employees to ensure a respectful and empathetic environment.

Benefits to Our Organization

Including individuals with intellectual disabilities is not only the right thing to do, but it also brings significant benefits to our organization. Some of these include:

  • Enhanced Problem-Solving Different ways of thinking and approaching challenges can lead to creative solutions that we may not have considered otherwise.
  • Stronger Company Culture Our commitment to inclusivity fosters a work environment where all employees feel valued and appreciated.
  • A Broader Talent Pool By actively recruiting individuals with intellectual disabilities, we tap into an underutilized talent pool, increasing our chances of finding exceptional employees who may have been overlooked elsewhere.

Moving Forward Together

As we continue to build an inclusive workplace, we encourage all team members to approach one another with empathy, open-mindedness, and respect. Working with individuals with intellectual disabilities not only helps to break down societal barriers but also sets an example for others. Together, we can create an environment where everyone’s contributions are recognized and celebrated.

Thank you for your commitment to making CVTC a welcoming, inclusive, and diverse place to work. Let’s continue to learn from one another, build stronger teams, and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to succeed.

Warm regards, Bud Mullanix CEO, CVTC

Honoring Adam: A Light That Lives On at CVTC

Here at CVTC, we stand as one, forever learning and growing, reaching goals becomes fun! Through every triumph, every mile, we lift each other, share each smile.

But loss, it strikes with heavy hands, a missing piece, an empty stand. And now we grieve, our hearts so torn, for Adam, loved, forever worn.

His laughter echoed, his kindness stayed, a legacy that won’t soon fade. Though sorrow weighs, we choose to see, the light he left, his memory.

Together we stood, as we always do, honoring him, both strong and true. We shared our love, our stories bright, and turned our grief into his light.

For here at CVTC, we hold so dear, each soul we meet, each voice we hear. And though we mourn, we still embrace, the bond of love, time won’t erase.

Rest in peace, dear Adam, friend, your spirit stays, it does not end.

Kyle Cooks Up Confidence Through Self-Advocacy

Kyle has been working hard on developing his self-advocacy skills—and recently, he put them to great use!

One of Kyle’s passions is cooking, and he took a big step by speaking up and asking to lead a cooking class for his peers.

With confidence and enthusiasm, Kyle taught the group how to make his favorite homemade casserole. He explained each step, offered helpful tips, and made sure everyone was involved in the process.

The best part? After the class, Kyle proudly served a delicious lunch to his peers and staff.

It was a wonderful moment of connection, leadership, and celebration of Kyle’s growth.

Way to go, Kyle! Your advocacy and skills are an inspiration to us all.

The Power of Voice

Fresno West Celebrates Syrena Gonzalez and the Power of Voice

Fresno West would like to thank our Employee of the Year, Syrena Gonzalez, for the amazing job she has been doing to support the individuals she serves.

A group of Fresno West individuals advocated that they wanted to go out into the community to search for jobs. The team was filled with motivation and initiative as they set out to explore employment opportunities around Fresno, California—including stops at John’s Incredible Pizza and Huckleberry’s Breakfast and Lunch.

The team introduced themselves to the owners of Huckleberry’s and professionally expressed their interest in joining the team. They were high-spirited, excited, a little nervous—but most importantly, they were ready and motivated.

Just days later, the team was thrilled to hear that Huckleberry’s was interested in interviewing a few of the candidates. After final interviews, Mr. Danny Cox and James Nutt were selected to become part of the Huckleberry’s team.

This success story is a true testament to their hard work, determination, and the power of voice—the ability to advocate, to dream, and to achieve.

Congratulations to Syrena and the entire Fresno West team!

Spring Blossoms and Garden Magic at CVTC

“Spring flowers are Mother Nature’s way of showing us love and beauty.” — Lisa Miramontes (Stockton West)

Throughout her time with CVTC, Lisa M. has revitalized our garden, transforming it into a vibrant space that provides vocational training opportunities and serves as an excellent outlet for our participants' self-expression and enjoyment.

As the seasons change, our participants have the opportunity to embrace their roles as gardeners by planting colorful flowers and vegetables, enabling them to express their feelings and emotions through their interactions with plants.

Our participants also dive into their artistic sides, crafting delightful garden gems—like that fabulous bird bath over to the left!

Andrew kicks off his mornings like a botanical superhero, showering his beloved flowers with all the love and water they can handle! It’s like a magic potion that sets him up for a day filled with sunshine and smiles.

Reconnecting Through ASL

Spotlight on Andreka – Instructor II

Andreka is dedicated to fostering an encouraging and empowering environment that helps individuals reach their full potential.

Many participants have a background in sign language but have experienced a decline in their ability to communicate using American Sign Language (ASL) due to limited practice.

To address this, Andreka is actively guiding participants through structured lessons designed to help them regain and strengthen their ASL skills.

DISABILITY AWARENESS

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

A group of people holding up cups of coffee.

Every March, we recognize Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month—a time to promote understanding, inclusion, and respect for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).

This national observance highlights the many contributions people with I/DD make to their families, workplaces, and communities.

Developmental disabilities, which include conditions such as autism, cerebral palsy, and Down syndrome, are lifelong challenges that affect learning, communication, and everyday living.

But more importantly, individuals with these disabilities bring unique talents, perspectives, and strengths that deserve to be celebrated and supported.

This month is not only about awareness—it’s about action. It’s a chance to break down stereotypes, advocate for accessibility and equality, and create environments where people of all abilities are welcomed, included, and empowered.

Let’s continue working together to build communities that see the ability in every person.

Simple Tips for a Fresh Start This Season

Spring into the Season: Simple Tips for a Fresh Start

Spring is a season of renewal—a perfect time to refresh your space, mindset, and routines. As the days get longer and the weather warms up, here are a few simple tips to help you make the most of the season:

1. Declutter and Clean

Spring cleaning isn’t just about dusting—it's about clearing out what you no longer need. Take time to organize your space, donate items you no longer use, and create a fresh, clean environment to enjoy.

2. Get Outside

After a long winter, spending time in nature can boost your mood and energy. Whether it's a walk in the park, planting flowers, or just soaking up some sunshine, being outdoors can do wonders for your well-being.

3. Refresh Your Routines

Spring is a great time to revisit your goals or try something new. Start a new hobby, rework your schedule, or set small, meaningful intentions for the season.

4. Eat Fresh

Take advantage of seasonal fruits and veggies by adding more color to your meals. Think strawberries, asparagus, spinach, and peas—nutritious and delicious!

5. Connect and Reconnect

Warmer weather brings more opportunities to socialize. Reach out to friends, join a local event, or simply spend more quality time with loved ones.
